2019 year end review

2019 was a busy year for us, but that doesn’t mean that we stopped working towards our financial goals. That is the beauty of having a financial system in place, the amount of time that you have to spend on it once it is set up can be as much or as little as you have time for.

In 2019, we paid off our mortgage, Mrs. LOTT finished a master’s degree, and our savings rate was greater than 60%.

Plotting my escape

We started this blog to document the path to FIND freedom in real-time. The stress of modern life with the endless work and obligations is wearing on me and my family. We are incredibly fortunate to be in a position to have the possibility of change and escape from the chronic stress of working life. As kids we often get the question of what we want to be when we grow up, I now know my answer; the answer is free. Like the English gentlemen of old, I want to be free to have the time to pursue my interests and ideas in leisure and be beholden to no one.

2018 year end review

In 2018 we started writing about striving for financial independence, one with no debt. We call the process FIND (financial independence, no debt) freedom. Some people might consider this a subset of FIRE (financial independence, retire early), but the goal is different. When you have debt you are in a fragile position. Debt makes you a slave to someone else. Our last remaining debt is the mortgage on our house, but its days are numbered.

It is difficult to consider anyone with debt to be financially independent, the two things are mutually exclusive. When you have debt you are in a fragile position. Debt makes you a slave to someone else. Our last remaining debt is the mortgage on our house, but its days are numbered.

Start calculating your savings rate now!

Are you are one of the 38% to 76% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck? How long will it be until you are able to stop working? Are you planning on working into your golden years (I wouldn’t count on it)? Even if your plan is to win the lottery or somehow become suddenly rich, 70% of people with sudden wealth are typically broke within a few years.

What people don’t understand is that after a certain level it isn’t important how much you make. What is important is how much you spend of what you make. A savings rate of 0% (or even negative if you are in debt) means you will always have to work for a living. Somehow people don’t get how to implement this simple concept.
